Lakeside Board of Education

Regular Meeting

November 14, 2016

Staff Development Room

5:30 P.M.

The meeting was called to order by the president: The following Members were present: Mr. Collins, Mrs. Green, Ms. Griffin, Mr. Livingston, Mr. Mosley and Mr. Williams. Mr. McJoy was absent.

The October 10, 2016 minutes were approved as presented and the superintendent discussed the financial and attendance reports.

A motion was made by Mrs. Green and seconded by Mr. Williams to increase the district’s contribution amount toward employee’s insurance premiums from $161.48 to $165.00 per employee that participates in the EBD Health Insurance Program. The motion carried.

The superintendent recommended the annual reoccurring employees bonus to the board. A motion was made by Ms. Griffin and seconded by Mr. Williams to give all certified staff $2,000 and classified staff $1000.00 annual bonus which will be prorated based on contracted days and hours worked. The motion carried.

The board review the information and surveys on the two proposed school based clinics (Lake Village Clinic and Mainline Health Clinic). Based on the survey documentations received from parents and staff, Lake Village Clinic received 32% of the votes and Mainline received 68% of parents and staff votes. A motion was made by Mrs. Green to approve Mainline as the school based health clinic based on the proposed services offered and the votes of parents and staff. The motion carried.

The board viewed a video of a metal detector system and its purpose and use. A motion was made by Mr. Collins and seconded by Mr. Mosley to purchase and install a metal detector at the Lakeside High School. The vote was unanimous.

Mr. Collins gave a report on on-line courses to be offered in Eudora with an agreement with UAPB to increase the pool of certified teachers in the district.

The superintendent presented a proposal from Mr. Ray Brooks to allow the Lakeside High School Band to participate in the Honda Battle of the Bands in Atlanta, GA on January 26-28, 2017. The band has raised funds to pay for the Charter Buses. Each band member will pay $108.00 for Motel and expenses. A motion was made by Mr. Collins and seconded by Mr. Green to allow the Band to participate in the Honda Battle of the Bands in Atlanta, GA. The motion carried.

Mrs. Stone, Elementary Principal, presented a display of art work completed by her GT students; Ms. Armour, High School Principal, gave a presentation on Character Education Activities to used with the high school students.

The superintendent gave the board an update on the December 12, 2016 school board meeting, members hours and up coming conference dates (ASBA State Conference, December 7-9, 2016, NSBA Conference in Denver, Colorado from March 25-27, 2017 and ASBA Southern Regional Conference in Hot Springs in July 2017).

The superintendent presented the board with a plaque from ASBA which reads, “Lakeside – Lake Village School Board has earned the Outstanding Board Award 2016-2017. This award is achieved when all members of a district’s school board have earned at least 25 hours of board member training to receive the individual outstanding board member award.”

The president requested that the board go into executive session for the purpose of employment, appointment, discipline, promotion or resignation of personnel. After the discussion, the public was allowed to return. A motion was made by Mr. Collins and seconded by Ms. Griffin to accept the

resignation of Billy Flowers (High School Social Studies), the retirement of Pat Douglas (Superintendent’s Secretary with 28 years of Service) and approve the contract of Sam Brock (High School Social Studies) and accept the superintendent’s recommendations to hire Mrs. Sharon Walker as

an interim superintendent’s secretary for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year. Salary will be prorated based on district salary schedule. The motion carried.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:45 P.M.
